As Columbus prepares for the challenges of the future, economic
and structural growth shape our city. Protecting the character of
our historic areas and advocating for quality design of new structures
and spaces is increasingly important. These issues influence Columbus’
desirability as a place where people wish to live and work. Columbus
Landmarks Foundation seeks to enhance the quality of the city’s
built environment by promoting the preservation and rehabilitation
of historic areas and structures and by advocating for and encouraging
excellence in new design. In doing so, CLF recognizes that these
physical assets contribute to Columbus’ economic vitality and quality
of life.
What is CLF’s role in a growing community?
As an educational and planning organization, Columbus Landmarks
Foundation promotes contact and dialogue among historic preservationists,
government and business leaders, developers, city planners, neighborhood
groups, architects, and members of our financial community.
CLF seeks to:
What is CLF’s role in preserving Columbus’ past?
Acting as the city’s historic preservation conscience, CLF works
to educate the people of Columbus about the importance of our city’s
historic fabric. CLF often encourages developers and planners to
find new uses for historic buildings. But we cannot do it alone.
Real world solutions to issues of urban design and historic preservation
require the support and cooperation of many individuals and organizations.
We are proud of the variety of neighborhood, community, business
and government groups that have worked with us through the years.
Legislation also plays a crucial role in our efforts. CLF has been
instrumental in securing the adoption of legislation to designate
historic areas, control demolition and encourage reinvestment in
our historic resources. Historic district status -- and the protection
of it -- is also the result of CLF working with others to secure
passage of legislation that is good for Columbus.
